Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now: Girl-power Lathered in Funk and Disco

Dua Lipa consolidates stinging sass and carefree confidence as staple features of her music with the new and empowering break-up single, ‘Don’t Start Now.’ Her deep and smoky voice, flecked with indifference, manifests lyrics of a typically ‘girl-power’ inclination – that of confident, ambitious and self-reliant women. ‘I’m all good already/So moved on it’s scary’ endorses the same sentiment of previous hits like ‘IDGAF’ and ‘New Rules’ making it plain that the confidence-boosting break-up song is an area in which Lipa quite clearly excels.

Musically, Lipa explores fascinating new realms bringing individuality and a welcome variety to the charts. Appearing in the form of an octave-leaping bass and the syncopated stabbing of electric guitars, ‘Don’t Start Now’ is lathered in funk and disco influences which emerge as a quirky development from the synthesised, vocal alteration of ‘New Rules’. Yet, despite harking back to the 70s, Lipa maintains her voguish image with a cool, dance-anthem sound that secures ‘Don’t Start Now’ as an empowering bop for drunk, scorned lovers to sing raucously in clubs. Lipa describes her new sound as the beginning of a ‘new era.’
